Well, I can't tell you how the hosts were configured. Maybe the name resolution is configured in the /etc/hosts file!? Anyway the proper way to configure a vSphere environment is to create Host-A entries for all ESXi hosts, and configure the DNS servers and the fully qualified domain name in ESXi.
