Formatting a VM or doing any other tasks within the VM does not affect the datastore in first place. It's the .vmdk file located in the VM's folder on the datastore which is presented to the VM as it's disk drive. Only if the VM's virtual disk is thin provisioned (growing as needed) it may in crease in size with installing an OS or applications within the guest.
